About Us

Who Are We?

Better Crops Ltd is an agriculture Company that leverage technology to make affordable, efficient, and sustainable technologies that contribute to reduction of post-harvest losses in cereals, grains, fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers among the small holder farmers. We develop technologies that support Crop production, Integrated Pest and Diseases Management and Soil fertility management and also provide agriculture related services that enable small holder farmers produce better crops in a changing climate, build resilience and increase agricultural productivity.

We supply through our sole sub distributor Almurid Exporters Ltd the CA Films, Shelf Life Extension Technology, Modified Atmosphere Packaging and other related post-harvest technologies namely Dry Cards and the hermetic bags.

We are also working with approximately 843 small-holder farmers to aggregate, process, and trade in cassava, sweet potatoes, grains, and legumes around Homabay, Migori and Kisumu Counties. We have, since 2020 (through our aggregation efforts in the region) established a prime opportunity to add value to cassava and sweet potato through milling and blending with other flours to enhance the value of the tuber crops and increase the average earnings of both our enterprise and the growing number of small cassava farmers.

We also supply the following technologies, solar-powered irrigation systems accompanied by other products like greenhouses, shade houses, screen houses, mulching technology, and various agricultural nets (Birdnets, shade nets, insect nets).

Better crops Ltd also runs a mini processing unit for Cassava, Maize and Finger Millet value addition in homabay County. In this project we buy cassava, Maize and finger millet from small holder farmers in homabay and produce flour for sale our customers in Kisumu and Nairobi.

Why We Do What We Do

Climate Change

Climate change is widely recognized as the most urgent problem facing humanity. We know that human activity is warming the Earth. The wide-ranging impacts of climate change are already being felt: economically, environmentally, and socially. All of these impacts are connected, so that worsening one problem can contribute to another. That also means that tackling greenhouse gas emissions can create cascading benefits in different areas.

To farmers and farming enterprises, Climate change affects farming in the following ways:
Both gradual climate change and more frequent extreme events such as flooding and prolonged drought create a decrease in reliable cropping days making crop failure more likely. Flooding further Causes damage to environment, Land degradation, destruction of infrastructure, displacement of farming families, washes crops and livestock, brings water borne diseases that leads to ill health to the farming house hold.

The increased frequency of droughts and temperature will cause water shortages for crop and livestock and increase rate of evaporation that leads to moisture stress in crops.
Weeds as compared to crop plants can better adapt to temperature fluctuations than crop plants. They are sturdy and can grow in a wide range of climatic conditions and soil types. They produce an astounding number of seeds which are often light in weight and are carried by wind to near and far away destinations. They are not only ecology destroyers but are also a serious health hazard.
Global warming could lead to an increase in pest insect populations, harming yields of staple crops. While warmer temperatures create longer growing seasons, and faster growth rates for plants, it also increases the metabolic rate and number of breeding cycles of insect populations. On one hand, warmer temperature lowers the effectiveness of some pesticides but on the other hand, it favors insect carriers of many disease pathogens and natural enemies of pests and diseases. Thus, depending on the pest or pathogen, elevated CO2 may act in a synergic or opposing manner with higher temperatures.
Changes in the timing of long and short rains make it difficult to plan planting and harvest times, causing lower yields and greater food insecurity.

Food Security

The number of people in the world affected by hunger continued to increase under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that more than 800 million people in the world face hunger as of 2020. We need to produce about 70 percent more food by 2050 to feed an estimated 9 billion people.

Post-Harvest Losses

Postharvest loss accounts for direct physical losses and quality losses that reduce the economic value of crop, or may make it unsuitable for human consumption. It is estimates that 1.3 Billion tonnes of food production are wasted every year, which is equivalent to one-third of the world food production. This means that more than 820 million people do not have enough to eat. It is estimated that food Waste alone causes 10% of greenhouse gases.

Clean Energy

Agriculture currently contributes 19–29% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Without action, that percentage could rise substantially as other sectors reduce their emissions Clean, renewable energy preserves the world’s natural resources and also reduce the risk of environmental disasters.

Financial Inclusion

500 million smallholder farming households that represent 2.5 billion people rely on agricultural production for their livelihoods. Through the use of technologies such as blockchain, centralized exchange hubs could enable data to be stored and shared securely, and ultimately scale financial inclusion for smallholder farmers.
